NOTICE Re: Amendment to Local Rule 40.1 Assignment of Cases
The United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts has amended Local Rule 40.1 to reflect changes to civil case weights approved by the Judicial Conference of the U.S. Courts.

February 7: The U.S. District Court Forum, featuring the district judges and chief magistrate judge in a panel discussion, will be held on April 25, 2019 from 4-6 p.m.


On behalf of Chief Judge Patti B. Saris and all of the members of the U.S. District Court, please join us for a panel discussion by the district judges and chief magistrate judge about their practices and procedures and new developments in the law.

 

February 8: On Saturday, February 9, 2019, CM/ECF will be unavailable from 7:00am - 2:00pm, in order to perform system maintenance.

April 2019

April 2: Dear Members of the Federal Bar,

The United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island will conduct its innovative training program on opening statements and closing arguments scheduled to take place at the federal courthouse in Providence, Rhode Island. The program will provide hands-on training and lectures spread over four days, starting Monday, May 20, 2019, and ending on Friday, May 24, 2019. Participants will be provided with an opportunity to improve their trial skills in opening statements and closing arguments and receive 13.5 CLE credits, including 1 ethics credit. Partial scholarships are available. Registration will close when the program is full, so interested attorneys should apply as soon as possible.

May 16: 10th Anniversary of the Springfield United State District Courthouse: Thursday, May 23, 2019, 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM 

The court will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Springfield Courthouse as 300 State Street, Springfield. The event will begin promptly at 3:00 p.m. and will include a brief speaking program, including words Congressman Richard Neal and Moshe Safdie, the Courthouse's esteemed architect. Refreshments to follow.

May 16: FBA MA Chapter --Hot Topics in Immigration: From the Border to the Board Room May 30, 2019, 4:00 PM to 5:15 PM

You are cordially invited to attend what promises to be a lively, informative panel discussion among a local district court judge, experienced practitioners in immigration law, and a law professor who has written and lectured on the subject. Topics will include asylum, sanctuary policies, family separation, and business immigration, among others. Shannon Dooling of WBUR will moderate, and the panelists will include U.S. District Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV, Ivan Espinoza-Madrigal (Executive Director, Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice), Susan Church (immigration attorney at Demissie & Church), Matthew Maiona (immigration attorney at Maiona Ward Immigration Law), and Professor Kristin Collins (Boston University School of Law).

July 2019

July 31: On July 1, 2019, the First Circuit Judicial Council approved an amended version of the District of Massachusetts Plan for Implementing the Criminal Justice Act of 1964, as Amended 18 USC §3006A. The CJA Plan (Plan) is effective August 1, 2019. The Plan provides the basic framework under which criminal defense services (including counsel, investigative, expert, and other services necessary for adequate representation) may be provided to persons otherwise financially unable to obtain adequate representation. The revised Plan and the redline version detailing the substantive changes are available on the courts website through the links below. The Guidelines for Claims Submitted for Reimbursement Under the Criminal Justice Act (Guidelines), have also been revised and a redline version is available on the website. September 3: Criminal Justice Act Board Announces Application Deadline for Boston, Springfield, and Worcester CJA Panel. To apply, please download the application to your computer and save it. All responses must be typewritten. The deadline is September 30, 2019.
